Description
The Trevi Fountain was designed by architect Nicola Salvi and was finished in 1762. It is the largest Baroque fountain in the city and the most famous fountain in the world. It was built at the end point of the aqueduct Aqua Virgo at the intersection of three roads (tre vie), hence its name, the Three Street Fountain. It is made from travertine stone quarried near Tivoli. It is one of the oldest water sources in Rome. It stands 85 feet tall and 65 feet wide.
Coins are meant to be thrown using the right hand over the left shoulder – doing so is said to ensure a return to the Eternal City.
